Lapel

William E. "Bill" Cecil, 69, of Lapel, unexpectedly passed away on May 9, 2026. Born and raised in Lapel and a member of the 1974 Lapel High School graduating class, Bill was proud to call it home for his entire life. He was deeply rooted in the community and treasured the friendships and connections he built there over the years. Whether talking with neighbors, catching up with lifelong friends, or simply spending time with those closest to him, Bill never met a stranger and made everyone feel like family. Some of his greatest joys were the simple moments spent with the people he loved most, especially his dear friends and neighbors who meant so much to him.

To know Bill was to know kindness, loyalty, and a servant's heart. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, or show up for the people he loved. Bill was a devoted Christian whose faith was the foundation of his life. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he found community, purpose, and fellowship throughout the years. His faith was not something he simply spoke about, it was something he lived out daily through his compassion, generosity, and genuine love for others. Bill believed deeply in caring for people, treating everyone with kindness, and serving wherever he was needed. His steady faith carried him through both joyful and difficult seasons of life.

Bill spent many dedicated years at Stanley Chevrolet, where he became known not only for his hard work, but for the genuine care he showed every customer who walked through the door. He loved serving others and took pride in building relationships that often turned customers into lifelong friends. In recent years, he enjoyed working at AutoZone, where he continued doing what he loved most, connecting with people sharing stories with those around him.

One of the greatest joys of Bill's life was the lifelong brotherhood he shared with his fellow members of Theta Chi Fraternity at Ball State University. The friendships he built through Theta Chi remained close to his heart throughout his life, and he deeply valued the memories, laughter, support, and bonds he shared with his fraternity brothers over the years. Those brothers were more than friends to Bill, they were family, and their lifelong bond was something he treasured deeply.

He is now reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife, Susan, his father, William Cecil; his mother Marylou Cecil; and his brother-in-law and best friend, Michael Hannon.

Bill is survived by his daughter, Bailee Tofaute, and her husband, Spence; his brother, Scott Cecil; his mother-in-law; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law who loved him dearly; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, lifelong friends, fraternity brothers, coworkers, neighbors, and community members who will forever cherish his memory.A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 217 East 7th Street, Lapel, Indiana 46051 with Pastor Scott Taylor and Scott Hersberger officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Wednesday at the church.
