Edward “Ed” L. Smith made a peaceful transition to Eternity around 3 a.m. on March 19, 2022 on the Feast of St. Joseph. Ed was born on April 9, 1934 in Anderson, IN to Leroy M. and Goldie M. (Smoot) Smith. Ed married the love of his life, Kathleen A. Richard, on June 21, 1958 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Anderson, IN. Ed faithfully served our country in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he worked for Delco-Remy/General Motors as the Sergeant of Security.
Just like St. Joseph, protector of the Holy Family, Ed was a loyal, righteous, and kind man of few words. But he performed rock solid, crucial actions behind the scenes when needed, having been a US Marine, Sergeant of Security for Delco-Remy, loving husband to Kathleen, and wonderful Dad to David, Mark, Kathy, Ann, and Danny. Ed was a volunteer at Anderson Public Library and enjoyed taking books to Homebound. He loved doing crossword puzzles and watching College Basketball. Most importantly, he loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them whenever he could.
Ed will be dearly missed by his wife of 65 years, Kathleen; his children, Mark (Mary) Smith, Kathy (Tim) Pedro, David (Teresa) Smith, Ann M. Henriott, and Daniel Joseph Smith; his 15 grandchildren; his 6 great-grandchildren; his sister, Rebecca Eglen; his brother-in-law, Clement Richard; his sister-in-law, Nora Carsey; and his numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Gaile Norkus.
The visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., Thursday, March 24, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1115 Pearl St., Anderson, 46016. The funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m. at the Church. Cremation will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ed’s name may be gifted to Eleos Hospice Care.
