Lorraine H. Cowger, 89, of Anderson, went to her eternal home on June 8, 2025. Her final days were touched by the love of friends and family, especially the long and caring devotion of her daughter, Julie, who will miss her dearly.
Lorraine was born on August 4, 1935 in Gibbon, Minnesota to the late Philip and Rose (Carlson) Peterson. Later, as a small child, the family moved to Steger, Illinois where she grew up. Shortly after graduating from Bloom High School (Chicago Heights, Illinois) in 1953, Lorraine became engaged to her childhood friend and high school sweetheart Richard "Dick" Cowger. A year later, in 1954, they married and remained devoted to each other through 62 years of marriage before Dick’s passing in 2017.
The family moved from Illinois to Littleton, Colorado and back to the Chicago area before settling in Anderson in 1975. Lorraine worked for a number of banks in the Anderson area, starting with Anderson Banking Company and then retiring as a teller for National City Bank/PNC. Everyone knew her and loved her and would wait in line to do their banking with her rather than go to a shorter line. She found her spiritual home at St. John's Lutheran Church and was a faithful member for 50 years. Lorraine found joy in serving the church and through the years served as a member of the altar guild, the church council; and volunteered as an usher, a greeter, and for the church’s food pantry.
Lorraine enjoyed being around people and was often referred to as being part of the "welcome wagon".
She made everyone feel welcome and at home, whether that be in her neighborhood, work, church, or where she spent her final years, Sugar Fork Crossing Assisted Living facility. She was quick to laugh and had a beautiful smile that would light her blue eyes. Lorraine enjoyed shopping, collecting angels, and loved listening to the Gaither's Gospel music.
Left to cherish her memories are her children, Julie (Robert) Benson and Michael (Sheila) Cowger; grandchildren, Brielle Cowger and Kamri Cowger; and numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dick; brothers, Vernon Peterson, Arden Peterson, Harlan Peterson, and Keith Peterson; and sister, Marlene Erickson.
