Charles "Burl" Carmichael

August 31, 1945 — March 26, 2026

Greenfield

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charles "Burl" Carmichael, 80, of Greenfield, Indiana, who left this world on March 26, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 31, 1945, in Greenfield to the late Virgil Charles and Mary Elizabeth (Simmons) Carmichael, Burl was a cherished father, husband, grandfather, and friend whose life was characterized by commitment to family, community, and the land he loved.

Burl's journey through life began with his marriage to the love of his life, Georgia Mae Braddock, on June 11, 1967. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, love, and dedication. A proud graduate of Purdue University, Burl earned a master's degree in agricultural education, equipping him to share his passion for farming and the environment with future generations. Burl began his career as a vocational agricultural education teacher at Rossville High School from 1969 to 1970, before devoting nearly three decades to Eli Lilly Elanco Animal Health, where he worked from 1970 until his well-earned retirement in 1998.

In addition to his professional pursuits, Burl was a devoted farmer, continuing to cultivate the land that meant so much to him until his retirement from farming in 2008. His love for agriculture extended beyond his own fields; he dedicated his time and talents to numerous committees in Hancock County, including reinventing the comprehensive plan for the county and the Platte Committee, the Soil and Water Conservation Committee, and the Hancock Health Hospital Foundation Board, where he served for three years. He also took great pride in being the executor of the Mary E. Carmichael Fund for the Future of Agriculture, ensuring that The Carmichael's commitment to the field would continue to flourish.

Burl is survived by his loving wife, Georgia; his cherished children, Jason (Karen) Carmichael and Alissa (Chad Bozell) Carmichael; and his three grandchildren, Piper, Mackenzie, and Braxton.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lois Ellen Apple.
