A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Barbara Joan “Bonnie” Morehead died on January 16, 2026. She was 87 years old.
Bonnie was born on October 21, 1938, in Anderson, Indiana to Robert “Bob” and Emma Lou Higbee. She grew up in a red brick two-story house her father had built a short time before and where the family would own and operate Higbee’s Christmas Tree Farm for many years.
Bonnie attended Anderson High School, graduating in 1956. She was a student at Ball State University when she met her husband Charles “Chuck” Morehead. They married in 1957 and were married for 63 years before his death in 2021.
She spent most of her young adult life devoted to raising her two children. Later in life she co-owned a retail gift shop in Pendleton – A View From the Porch – with her friend Sharon Stegall. The experience allowed her to combine her love of home décor, gardening and connecting with people.
A skilled artist, Bonnie always had a project where her creativity shone, from paintings, to decorating her home, to landscaping her garden. She also dedicated many hours to researching family history.
Bonnie loved going to family gatherings, organizing chili dinners with neighbors, and regularly connecting with her high school classmates.
Bonnie and Chuck traveled to multiple places in the U.S. and around the world, including European cruises and regular trips to Florida.
Bonnie is survived by her son, Jeff (Brenda) and daughter Karin (Jeff) Kiefer; four grandchildren: AJ Rosengarten, Samuel and Anna Morehead, and Jessica (Rob) Redden; and four great-grandchildren: Leia Hinkle, Isabella Burgeson, and Caroline and Victoria Redden.
In addition to her husband, Bonnie was preceded in death by her brother, Don Higbee, and her grandson, David “Tyler” Hinkle.
